Southern River
Situated in the shire of the City of Gosnells, Southern River is conveniently located just 22kms from Perth.
It was originally a rural area with chicken farms for egg production, horse breeding properties and boarding kennels for cats and dogs. These farms combined gave the area a population of less than 500 people.
The current environment has just started to undergo major changes; plans for the next 5 years will see the suburb totally redeveloped into medium density residential properties with average block size being 700 mĀ². The result will be a population increase to above 15,000; along with this will be the building of all the necessary infrastructure like shops, schools, park and gardens.
This area is highly constrained for urban development, due to the low-lying nature of the land, the significant environmental features including wetlands and Bush Forever sites. The Southern River catchment also contributes a significant amount of nutrients to the Canning River, which eventually flow into the Swan River estuary. Due to these factors, the developments have been carefully planned to impose minimal negatives impacts the environment whilst still increasing the population capacity.
The region is bounded by Ranford Road, Passmore Street, Matison Street and Holmes Road. Most residents are currently deeply involved in either greyhound racing or the breeding, showing and trialling of pedigree dogs and/or cats. Several boarding catteries and kennels are found in the area, servicing a large proportion of the Perth Metropolitan area.
The demographic of the area will undergo big changes as the residential areas develop. It is expected young families will find the area attractive. With the beautiful parks and lake, modern new homes, plus convenient location, current residents are also rating the suburb well on forums.
The local school is Thornlie Christian College though there are many other schools in neighbouring suburbs.
Other services in the area include the Southern River Scouts group, sporting facilities including a local hockey club and football club, and accommodation options that include bed and breakfast accommodation. The popular Brooklands Tavern is a great place for residents and visitors to meet and have a meal and a drink.
Southern River Shopping Centre is the local convenient shopping option, with a Coles supermarket plus over 35 specialty stores and showrooms including fresh food, fashion and services as well as easy access to loads of free parking. There are also many other and larger shopping options within 15 mins drive away.
